[Publib] National Volunteer Week--In the Library

Hi! Our library plans an evening of entertainment and dining for our volunteers. The volunteers are allowed to bring one guest for the event. We decorate our meeting room with theme appropriate decorations, enlist staff to create and perform a skit, and then giveaway doorprizes. After the skit, attendees are able to mingle while they munch!

Our skit always centers on a theme that praises the volunteers for their work. We try to be witty when coming up with the scripts. In the past they have done spoofs on Lord of the Rings, Chicago, Happy Days, Western Round-up, Wizard of Oz, etc. This year the theme is based on Gilligan's Island and Pirates of the Caribbean. The premise is that our librarians leave for a cruise after they find that they alone simply cannot do all of the work in the library. After being marooned on "Biblio-Isle", a band of pirates discover them and offer to take them back to their library. Back on their native soil, the pirates offer the librarians treasure to help them get all of their work done. The librarians open the treasure chest and aside from one coin, there is a slip of paper that reads "Volunteers".

Add a few songs tailored to match your theme and praise your volunteers and you'll give your volunteers a night they'll look forward to year after year (at least ours do!)

If you'd like to see a sample of our skit or want more information, please email me as I'd love to help you further.

Sincerely,

Amanda Brewer

Hello,

National Volunteer Week is coming up at the end of April and I was wondering in what ways libraries celebrate their volunteers. Our local volunteer center puts out a 'Volunteer Tabloid' that week that thanks volunteers from local organizations. Last fall, we held a Volunteer Thanksgiving potluck. I was just trying to think of a few things to do for the week to thank our volunteers. Thanks for any suggestions.
