[Publib] Wine Class

We've done wine and cheese pairings with both a wine and cheese expert. We tried to limit registration to 25, but our meeting room is visible from the entrance, and I think once patrons saw the wine bottles, they decided to join the group. We ended up with 48 people. We've done 3 so far, and all have been very popular. The wine expert is a local store owner and he donated the wine and his time to do the presentation. The cheese expert is a chef who had worked at Murray's in New York. He purchased the cheese and we reimbursed him along with an honorarium. We did not pay the wine guy anything - he refused payment. We didn't obtain a liquor license.

If you're going to offer tastings, you may need to get a liquor license. In California, the agency is Alcoholic Beverage Control. Before you start worrying about liability, etc., find out what permits you'd need. There may also be a state or local law regulating consumption of alcoholic beverages on public property.

I was wondering if anyone has ever held a wine class at their library. (Basic 101 on wine that also allows for sampling.) If so, how successful was it? Were you concerned with liability issues? Any information is appreciated.
