[Publib] Books and AV circ

We are a County Library System with 5 branch locations that circulate
over a million items each year.

Our main library circs an average of 35,000 items each month.  Currently
we have a separate check-out desk for books and AV media items.  The AV
or Media desk as we call it, is in a different location in our building
where most of the AV materials are displayed.

We are thinking about merging both desks into one, for sort of "one stop
shopping" to make it easier for our patrons.  Space issues, traffic
back-ups, and noise are factors we are taking into consideration.  

 

I was wondering if any libraries out there that circulate about the same
amount as we do would be willing to share how you do it.  Do larger
systems utilize two desks, one for AV and one for Books, or do you
simply have one desk for everything you circulate?  Your thoughts and
ideas will be greatly appreciated.
