If you think IM and chat lingo are funny to try to decode out of context, try reading verbatim minutes of a board meeting. They are actually what actually was said, with every um, like, you know, etc. and there is such a difference in how we speak and how we write that it seems, in writing, like a bunch of third graders were at the meeting. It sounds fine when you hear it.
That's half my problem with e-mail - I hear it and treat it like chatting in my head, like I'm having a conversation. I go awry with people when they read it as formal writing. I'm trying to remember that.
