While attending the Michigan Beginning Workshop back in 1999 (a certification class for non-MLS library staff) we had a "show and tell" session about our libraries.  I remember two women walking forward, each carrying a cake pan.  I couldn't figure out why until they explained that their small library had a very large collection of novelty cake pans.

I believe members of the community donated many of the pans after purchasing them for their child's birthday party or other event.  As I remember, the library charged a 25 cent rental fee and patrons were to return the pans in clean condition.

I do not know if the library still circulates cake pans, and I am sorry I do not remember the name of the library.  I do remember being told that the cake pans were a very popular item at their library.  (I must admit, that all these years later, one of the things I remember most from the weeklong class is the cake pans.)

Along the lines of the fishing poles that started out this discussion, I visited the Somers Public Library in Somers, Connecticut some years ago.  They checked out kid's backpacks filled with a small pair of binoculars, some basic field guides, and other outdoors related items.
