I LOVE reading this List! I thought this query was a null one. Love
library diversity of services.

At the Erie County Public Library (Erie PA) we added fishing poles and
tackle boxes a couple of years ago (policies below), which are funded by
our local SONS (Save Our Native Species) of Lake Erie, and supported by
the PA Fish and Boat Commission.

Our poles and so forth are child-size and not terribly expensive. In
PA, children under the age of 16 do not need licenses to fish.

The SONS also clean/repair/replace any damaged or missing items
(sinkers, bobbers, etc), although we did institute a cleaning fee, more
as a warning than anything else. We recently received donations of
life jackets which will be circulated with the fishing poles (and carry
their own release from liability forms).

I know that various state Fish and Boat commissions promote fishing
equipment loaner programs, as ours does throughout the State of PA. You
might contact any similar agencies to see if they or another
organization would help support your program.

Our new library will be located in a beautiful park area

with a small
pond. We would like to offer fishing poles to patrons
..but I need the
logistical side thought out. If anyone has any experience with this
sort of thing, please contact me personally. Some questions that come
to mind: how long do they check out? Do you require a deposit? Who
cleans them? [we don’t have facilities to do that] Who maintains and
restrings them? Are they barcoded/tracked in the database? Replacement
costs for broken items? If anyone has a policy about this, please let
me know. Thanks, Cheri Nienke
