[Publib] Library Administration & Ron's Postings

Bruce:
It isn't about "discretion and netiquette" as much as it is a matter of understanding the very nature of "publication" in this age of instant electronic communications. When one is posting to an e-list like PUBLIB, it is tantamount to addressing remarks to an audience of hundreds or thousands of professionals in one's field. You wouldn't imagine even the most careless MLS candidate facing an audience of 250 people at ALA Annual Conference without some kind of logical remarks prepared.
Undoubtedly WSU Library & Information Science program is just fine and doesn't need my praise or approbation. The MLS program I attended (Geneseo) was closed in 1982 and the Case Western Reserve University program (Matthew Baxter School) through which I earned my Ph.D. closed its doors in 1986. At least WSU still exists. --- And I can't think of anyone on our Lists who would affirm that they had never made an idiotic posting.

I apologize in advance for keeping this thread going.
WSU has it's own listserv that is used by LIS students and alumni alike, called LISPINF. The school does teach discretion and netiquette, including how to use LISPINF and other professional listservs.
It would be a shame if publibbers used one person's annoying postings to discount the WSU LIS program.

One thing that is evidently NOT being taught at Wayne State LS program (or wherever Ron attends) or in other LIS programs is the reality that posting to a List should be treated as a PUBLICATION that is representing one to thousands of professionals in the Library field. Too many of us - even on Council List - seem to think that what we are sending out on the list is tantamount to a private or semi-exclusive conversation rather than a broadcast to a sizeable constituency group. With PUBLIB, we not only communicate with thousands of people in the field, but our ramblings remain for many years and can be accessible via the archive search. I can still find comments of mine and those of my colleagues on every subject from carpet tile and school libraries to tax form distribution and coffee shops in libraries dating from a dozen years ago.

I hope Ron has a job. His postings are irritating and would not put him on my "must interview" list for any position.
