I am replying to the question whether anyone has presented advocacy
training to a board. I recently presented advocacy training to a public
library board. It is based on the ALA's advocacy handbook found at
http://www.ala.org/ala/issues/2008lah.pdf I distributed handouts listing
forms of address for various government officials, when is the best time
to talk to officials and a library advocate's checklist. If you are
interested, contact me offlist and I will try to find electronic copies
to forward.

The best development during the presentation was the board's decision to
craft a message to use when meeting and greeting officials. That way
they would all be on message and present a unified persuasive message.

Subject: [Publib] On new board member orientation

Three questions: 1) As part of new board member orientation, is any one
including the role of board members as "advocates" at the local, state
and national levels? 2) Are there some good examples of advocacy
training for board members that could be shared? 3)Is there anyway our
office can help with encouraging more trustee involvement with federal
legislative advocacy?
