Dear Lise,

We have a Continuing Education Project called "Create a new trustee 
orientation program" at

Part of this project is to create a manual for new trustees.

Frank Carlson Library in Concordia, Kansas created a manual that is the 
inspiration behind this project.
Here is the Table of Contents of their manual.

    * Library policies including Personnel policy, Trustee policy,
      Investment policy, Service policy, Internet access and Internet
      safety policy, Materials selection and Collection Development policy
    * Library board calendar
    * List of trustees, with term expiration
    * Contact information for board and staff
    * Library Bill of Rights, Statement on Labeling, and Freedom to Read
      Statement, publications of the American Library Association
      endorsed by the Library Board.
    * "Building Effective Support for the Rural Library", a publication
      of the State Library of Kansas
    * Technology Plan
    * Current library budget and most recent annual treasurer's report
    * Monthly meeting documents, the most recent minutes, financial
      statements, librarian's report and other associated documents.
    * Copy of the annual statistical report.

The Port Library in Beloit, Kansas created a packet for new trustees.

    * Funding sources
    * Budget
    * Previous year's usage statistics
    * Contact information for board of trustees
    * Some basic state library laws

      board members

    * Conversation starters for promoting the library
    * Board calendar
    * Robert's Rules of Order for small boards
    * Sentences describing staff "Life in Small Libraries".
