[Publib] Ideas for signs

That's assuming that everyone knows what the icons mean. One of the
grocery stores in town uses icon signage for their frozen food area and
at first glance it can be difficult to tell what the picture is and what
class of food it's supposed to represent.
I'm somewhat skeptical of icon signage. If it was really that good I
think I'd see more of it in the big box chain stores than I have.

For what it's worth, I'm a big fan of icon signage whenever it is
possible. Obviously not everything is well represented by an icon, but
many things are. Using images rather than words for directional
purposes means that people can find their way around regardless of what
language they speak.

We have been in our new building almost a year now.
We are using Ask Here for our reference/readers advisory/children's
desks - one on each of our three floors. What used to be the Checkout
Desk (now that we have self-check) is the Cards & Accounts Desk. There
is a small desk next to the entrance that we call the greeter desk, and
the desk in the computer center is referred to as the help desk, but
neither of those desks have signage.
There is a picture of the Ask Here sign here:
http://lclsonline.org/building/lcphotos2.php All the signs are the same
shape and color (although the Cards & Account desk is a half circle). We
use a lot of color coding in the building so all the desk signs are
Indian Paintbrush red. Other, smaller signs are blue with white letters
- ie signs to meeting rooms (the exterior wall of all meeting rooms is
purple).
Hope this helps!

We are about finished with remodeling the first floor of our main
building. I have to propose the signage and I'm not feeling very
excited about what I've come up with. Unfortunately, very few libraries
put photos of the inside of their buildings on their website so I could
"borrow" a few ideas. Does anyone have signage that really works for
patrons? I'm also trying to use natural language and not library
terminology. Help.
