Dear Cynthia --
My library does offer shift differential (generously, in my estimation -- and it's the first library I've worked for that offered any differential). We have 3 branches and 200 employees (150+ of which are public service folks) serving a county of 150,000...
Everyone gets an hour of shift differential to work evenings (you're scheduled to come in at 1PM to work 'til 9 whether you're salaried or hourly and get an hour dinner break), and the same sort of one-hour differential for Saturdays for which we're open from 10AM - 5PM. We will be opening at 9AM on Saturdays soon, but will schedule folks to start at 9 and work 'til 4 and some to start and 10 and work 'til 5.
Sundays, if you work for four hours (or more) -- we're open from 1-5PM -- you get credit for 8 hours. If you work less than 4 you get paid only for the hours you worked.
It works pretty well, from what I've seen over the past three years, once you get used to it!
