I have found that tangents are more prevalent when the book does not
have enough juice for a good discussion. People naturally will talk
about things more interesting. Also conversation about personal lives is
a good bonding experience and is a lot of the reason book clubs are so
popular. I will usually allow side conversations for a few minutes, and
wait to say something until I see an opening in their conversation that
will bring us back to the book. And other members have become
comfortable enough to do this as well.
