John, I did this down In Texas, and it was a big hit. The teens actually enjoyed it the most - they started a "never ending" story that was incredibly fun to read. They would each write a sentence, and someone else would come along and write the next. They started this project on their own, with no guidance or suggestion whatsoever - that's what I found to be so amazing about the whole thing. We had a few curse words, a few bad eggs. But overall, it went rather well. A lot of patrons would stop to see the "updates" on the wall.

You've inspired me. We haven't done it, but if we do, we may do it with an added fillip -- doing an undercoat of magnetic paint (Yes, it exists -- it has iron particles in it so that fridge magnets and the like will work on the wall) and then covering it with blackboard paint. I could see this working not only in a kids/teen area but in general meeting rooms. That could be a nice substitute or enhancement to the usual flip chart stuff.

Hi John-We just painted a large swath of out YA room wall with this. We put out color chalk and an eraser, wrote "Teen Space Be Nice" across the top and let them have at it. It has been terrific. I have had to erase one offensive remark (NOT about the library director) and the teens love it. When I told the board I was doing this, I also told them it was risky, but I was doing it anyway, and if there were issues, we'd deal with them. It has created nothing but goodwill among the adults as well as the teens.Cheers'...and that's MY opinionLisa Richland, DirectorFloyd Memorial LibraryGreenport, NY (the last library before Portugal)

Our Youth Services librarian would like to paint a small portion(under a row of coat hooks, fairly low down, close to the floor) of asmall-ish wall with chalkboard paint. Small children could use it,and/or the YS folks might use it for story times. I'd never heard ofchalkboard paint, but I looked it up. Haven't asked the board aboutit, and part of me thinks, "Why bother? Just do it," except that thebuilding *is* The Building, so....I'm wondering if anyone out there has used chalkboard paint, particularly in a place where the public and *not* just staff couldplay with chalk. And am wondering if there are any horror stories, rapturous stories, pitfalls and problems to consider before proceedingwith chalkboard paint, et al. I'm really looking for people whoactually have *used* chalkboard paint, and not just those who want tosuggest pitfalls and problems; we've projected a list of those here,already.Thanks. You may or may not respond to me off the list, as the spiritmoves, lest the list get too cluttered, as it did with SunshineHydrox, et al., I'm sure.John Richmond, DirectorAlpha Park Public Library District3527 So.
