I'm fine with our book discussions veering off into social, philosophical or political issues that are suggested by the book we're reading. In fact, sometimes I think the book is really just an excuse to bring people together to talk with each other, seriously and with a view toward learning.
If I sense the discussion going toward the purely personal, I gently lead it back. Or not so gently; my rapport with the group is that I can pretty much rap my ruler on the desk and say, smiling, "back on topic, people!" and they are good-humored about it.
