>I was hired 3 1/2 years ago to do adult programming at East Fishkill
>Community Library, about 65 miles north of NYC in the beautiful
>Hudson Valley region. We serve a community of about 26,000
>individuals. Working with the director Gloria Goverman and other
>staff we have developed a very extensive adult program here in
>Hopewell Junction.
>
>We have 42 signed up for tonight's program and they have been called
>to confirm their spaces so the total attendance for the
>month's adult programming given that variable should be 484. We
>do offer tea/coffee and cookies at most programs - paid out of our
>small programming budget. None of the presenters were paid for their
>services this month. Some of the people came to me to suggest
>programs, and others I recruited to do the programming after
>learning about their interests and expertise. As the Adult Services
>Librarian I do participate/run the book discussion group, the Tech
>Tuesday program, EFCL Beaders and the Knit n Knosh group. As a
>result of the change in programming, we have seen the Library become
>more of a community center in the past few years reaching out to
>grown ups in addition to the very extensive children's programming
>done by our Youth Services Librarian Cathy Nuding. All of the
>staff keep their eyes and ears open to learn about talents within
>our community who may be willing to share by doing a program or
>series of programs for both children and adults.

I encourage local businesses to present free educational seminars -
such as the Healthy Weight Program and Living Trust program offered
this month. We also serve as AARP Defensive Driving Course location
four to five times a year. Based on the questions I had repeatedly
at the Reference Desk we started the Garden Club, Evening Knitting
Group , the Tarot Group and the Women's Writing group.

We encourage local authors to find us, and we look for them. We
often use local authors for book group discussions and will host
writers from both the Millrock Writers Collective and the Taconic
Writers Group later this spring for Sunday afternoon readings.

We also offer Sunday musical programs - using local talent and
regional groups to perform - these are paid programming we provide
-this year we'll have 2 or 3 Sunday afternoon concerts in the fall.

All of the events appear on our web-calendar on the Library website,
and flyers are posted within our library as well as the ten
neighboring libraries. I also send out press releases to the daily
and weekly newspapers in our area for free publicity. And I've
pasted below a copy of our print adult programming calendar which is
available at the circulation desk and on the refreshment table for all events.

Here is a list of programming we offered in January , the first four
items are groups that meet weekly.
