Kayne,
Thanks for the information. It was along the lines I was thinking. It sounds like a great program for our after school crowd!

Beth,

About 10 years ago, when I was our system's youth specialist, I went to our local Goodwill store, Salvation Army and St. Vincent dePaul and collected their broken small appliances that folks had given them. The things didn't work, so they were happy to give them to me for the library and confused as to why I'd want them. We had a local teacher that came to our various library locations and supervised the kids while they disassembled the items. He even got a few kids to re-assemble them and with his help, fix some things. He showed them how he'd found a Skeletor ("Thunder cats, HO!) microphone at a yard sale and fixed it so it would work again.

Anyway, most kids just had fun learning to use a screwdriver and learning the difference between flat head and phillips head. A great program for all kids, including boys. We had good turn out. Moving a station wagon full of broken appliances from branch to branch, storing them until the program in the library, and finding enough screwdrivers to use were our only minor problems. I highly recommend doing this. I think it's a great way to promote non-fiction and science and learning.
