Durham County Library currently has four library positions available in the GREAT community of Durham, North Carolina. Durham County, a progressive and diverse area with 257,947 residents, is home to Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Research Triangle Park, and the Durham Bulls Baseball Team. Durham County Library is experiencing tremendous growth. In June 2006, we opened the first of four 25,000-sq.-ft. regional libraries; in September 2006, we re-opened the historic, restored, renovated, and expanded Stanford L. Warren Branch Library; and in January 2007, we opened the second regional library. Another new regional facility, as well as the expansion of an existing branch to a regional library will take place over the next two years. The Main Library is also scheduled for a major renovation as part of a transformed downtown that, within the next decade or so is expected to have $10 billion in private investment in addition to major

A sampling of Durham’s annual events includes the American Dance Festival, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Bull Durham Blues Festival, and the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. You will find a great climate, wonderful book stores, restaurants, hiking and biking, two library schools, great educational institutions and more in the Durham/Chapel Hill/Raleigh Triangle area. Deputy Library Director (Library, Administration)
Salary Range: $59,171 - $101,869

Durham County Library seeks an experienced, energetic and highly motivated individual for the position
of Deputy Director. The ideal candidate will possess superior leadership and interpersonal communication
skills to successfully organize and direct library staff in providing exemplary library services to the public..
Works closely with Director in developing and implementing strategic plans, policies and procedures and
planning and organizing for effective public service. Maintains administrative liaison with public facility
managers and Administrative Council to coordinate the provision of public services and implement strategic
plan objectives. Promotes the attainment of a diverse library staff and supports a diverse and culturally sensitive
working environment. Works closely with the Assistant Director for Administrative Services to see that system
personnel and training needs are met. Works with Public Service Facility Managers in interviewing and
recommending candidates to fill position vacancies. Coordinates hiring of public service staff. Demonstrates
leadership and motivation to library staff. Works with the Library Board in Director’s absence. Evaluates
services and functions for effectiveness to users, non-users and special groups recommending changes as needed. Develops operational budget for public services..
Qualifications:
Masters in Library Science or MLS equivalent from an accredited program with a minimum of 5 years
experience in a supervisory or administrative position in a public library serving a population of greater
than 40,000 and with a circulation greater than 250,000. Advanced graduate coursework in public
administration is preferred but not required. Thorough knowledge of professional library principles,
materials and practices; ability to evaluate library system and programs and to develop and implement
new or improved methods; ability to evaluate library personnel and to prepare reports; ability to plan,
organize and direct the work of professional, paraprofessional and clerical subordinates; ability to assist
groups, public officials, professional groups and the general public, and to establish and maintain effective
public relations; ability to represent the library system at professional meetings and to participate in the
development or improvement of professional library methods and standards; ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with other librarians and fellow workers; ability to communicate
effectively orally and in writing.
Administrative Librarian II (North Regional Library & East Regional Library)
Salary Range: $46,225 - $79,578
Position No.: R-40001788 (North); Position No.: 40002100 (East)
Serves as North Regional Library Manager, operating a new 25,000-sq.-ft. facility with the latest
technology systems. Performs responsible professional and administrative library work providing,
maintaining, and promoting library services in northern Durham County. Responsibilities include
directing and promoting activities and programs, supervising 21 staff members, maintaining the physical
plant and equipment, and supervising circulation, children’s and reference services. Requires completion
of a master’s program at an ALA-accredited library school and four years’ experience in professional library
work including six months of supervisory experience.
Special Requirements: Must be eligible for North Carolina Public Library Certification and acquire a valid NC driver’s license.
Development Officer (Library, Marketing Division)
Salary Range: $36,111 - $62,169

Durham County Library seeks an experienced, energetic and highly motivated individual to join the
Marketing Division as the Development Officer. The Development Officer works closely with the Library
Director, the Durham Library Foundation and the Grant Writer to establish goals and objectives to
complete Phase 2 of The Campaign for the Library – Branching Out. Serves as the Library’s staff liaison to the
Durham Library Foundation. Manages donor relations. Oversees maintenance of database, which includes
donors to the Friends and Foundation, as well as prospects, elected officials and others. Helps process all gifts to Foundation, Friends and Library. Promptly prepares deposits, sends thank you notes and acknowledges tribute gifts. Communicates with donors about library programs and/or services. Educates staff on fundraising
activities. Assists Library Director, Marketing Division, Program Committee and Leadership Council with
special events and programs. Initiates and builds on partnerships with community organizations that could lead
to collaborations, joint funding efforts and/or enhanced Library programming or services. Trains, organizes and
motivates volunteers in the development effort.
Qualifications:
A minimum of a Bachelors’ degree and 5 years fundraising experience, with considerable experience in
nonprofit management, fund development, major gift fundraising, and/or applicable public relations and
marketing programs. Excellent oral and written communications and presentation skills are required. Excellent
planning and organization skills; basic knowledge of computer systems and applicable software; general
knowledge of budgetary policies and procedures and financial management. Ability to communicate and work
with a diverse group of individuals, groups and organizations.. Knowledge of and involvement in Durham
community affairs.
Other preferred skills include: Spanish language skills, experience in public libraries, ability to think creatively
and collaboratively.
