[Publib] Presentations to Community Groups

Greetings,
I also have had the opportunity to speak and debate in many public
and private venues. I think it is very, very important for library
directors to have a public presence. I thought Rotary was a nice
venue. However, I would recommend attending a few meetings as
a guest first so that you can understand the meeting process and
rituals.
Although I was in quite a few plays growing up and have been
trained in sales, public speaking is a different art form. It is
the art of the monolog. It is very difficult to understand how you
are perceived without the benefit of constructive criticism.
I emphasize 'constructive'.
We have 145 Toastmaster Clubs in Rhode Island and eastern
Massachusetts. I was able to get one of the clubs to start meeting
at the library I was directing. I joined and found the process very
beneficial. I had a radio show at the same time and had been
giving lectures on aspects of technology for several years. But,
after giving a few Toastmaster speeches, I was able to hone my skills and
feel much more confident - the benefit of constructive and collegial
criticism.
There are several clubs out of the 145 in our Toastmaster District
that meet at public libraries and I think it has been a very positive
relationship for both the clubs and the libraries. It also provides
a massive network of people that connect from corporate to
public entities. We have chapters in many of the major industries
in New England. If you are interested in advancing your skills
and reducing your fear as an orator, I highly recommend joining.
Membership is transferable and (unlike Rotary) dues are only
about $80 per year.
Speak!

Yes.
An important part of my job is to speak to each community group each year --
the topic being whatever has been going on and would be of interest. In
Gatlinburg that is primarily Rotary and the Garden Club and the Chamber of
Commerce Board.
I also go to a City Commission meeting annually to thank them for their
support and tell them where the money went. We create an annual report that
is handed out to the City Commission at that time and enough extra copies to
take to community meetings.

Do you make presentations to community groups (i.e. Rotary, Elks, Lions)
about the library? We are looking for ideas about important elements to
include in such a presentation. What kinds of information have you
included? What formats seem to hold attention most effectively? How do you
get included on the schedule? Any other special tips?
Thanks very much in advance for the brainstorming help.
Thank you,
