[Publib] Presentations to Community Groups

I have done several "song and dances" for various community groups. Often,
when we start collecting in a new format, I do a presentation that showcases
that format, with a reminder of the other formats available. (I once had a
picnic basket full of the same title in book, Large print, cassette tape,
CD, video, DVD, etc. It really wowed the audiences, since people aren't
always aware that libraries are more than books and shushing.) Show and
tell is great for things like these. Thankfully, I don't usually have to do
the statistics type program that our director does so well.

Always take freebies-for years we had magnets with the addresses and hours
of our libraries. Be sure you take your business cards. Have something to
write down questions they ask that you don't have the answers for right
then-and call them back promptly.

Because our library director and department supervisors belong to many
community groups like the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Optimists, etc. they
are able to offer our services when they get a chance. If you aren't in a
particular group it helps to know someone who does belong.

Each group has its own criteria for how long you get to talk-the best advice
is to not go over the time limit, especially at breakfast meetings.

Do you make presentations to community groups (i.e. Rotary, Elks, Lions)
about the library? We are looking for ideas about important elements to
include in such a presentation. What kinds of information have you
included? What formats seem to hold attention most effectively? How do you
get included on the schedule? Any other special tips?
