[Publib] Marketing Nonfiction

We do lots of displays.we have not tried go-go dancers, but we have used
free food once or twice.

We mingle fiction and nonfiction in most of our displays (we rarely do an
all fiction or all nonfiction display) and usually have a theme, with if we
do say so ourselves, clever graphics and other eye-catching additions - a
rocking chair when doing "comfy" reads, a fancy tea set, kid's wagon, etc.,
depending upon the theme.

The circulation staff, along with our Teen Volunteers, all work to come up
with new and unusual themes and set-ups. Changing them frequently helps -
although we go back and use old themes again after a year or so.

We have found that a sign saying that all display books are available for
check-out helps - lots of folks don't want to "disturb" the display.

Hello Publibbers,

I wondered: what have you found to be successful with regard to marketing
non-fiction to your patrons? And, if your answer is "displays," what about
them is particularly alluring (clever graphics, book topics, free food, go
go dancers...)?

I'm especially interested in what small libraries are doing (physically
small: my library is approx. 9,000 square feet and averages about 60-70,000
books circulated monthly)---that doesn't mean I don't care what the larger
libraries are doing to promote their nonfiction, but I am curious as to what
the seriously space-constrained are doing in terms of collection marketing.

Looking forward to any and all suggestions, anecdotes, etc.

Thank you all!
