All you have to create in SL 'just to work
collaboratively' is a user name and password.  
You can join for free and it takes about half 
an hour to get oriented.

"Overhead" in the sense of having to create a whole digital environment 
just to work collaboratively.  Streaming video or audio/video 
conferencing seem way less demanding.

If the "greatest strength", as you put it, of Second Life is "virtual 
training and collaboration", surely some thought must be spent on why 
it's better than the by far more popular alternatives.

As far at keeping abreast of current technologies, there are always 
quite a few to choose from.  That's why we have users.  It's their job 
to pick the winners and losers -- not ours.  Otherwise you end up with a 
library full of Gopher sites and betamax video players.
