Those library staff members are facing many of the same problems others face
all over the country. We have long touted the idea that as Librarians we are
"professionals". It is up to us to prove that. How many Librarians look
like lawyers, CPAs, architects - how many dress like those other professionals?
How many belong to civic and service organizations where they mix and mingle
and get involved in such programs and activities? How many have made
themselves an integral and valuable part of the intellectual lives of their
communities? How many are referred to by their local Chambers of Commerce as "their"
Librarians with a capital L? No one is indispensable - but we should try to
make it very hard to part with us!
All professions have their jargon, their tools of the trade - we have ours
as well. Of course we are the only ones who give everything we know away so
we have to work twice as hard to prove our value - free is not easily measured
in terms of "Value".
We tell grad students - stand up, speak up, look the role. If our profession
is to survive it is up to you - and to all of us.
