[Publib] Discarded books...oh my!

Perhaps we should do an annual craft program on making things of discarded
books-you know, the purses out of books, or the Christmas trees from old
Reader's Digests. Of course, I haven't yet thought of a craft project for
mildew. (See my tongue firmly in cheek.)

. And, if there's a gung-ho recycling person locally, maybe he or she could
put the library in contact with someplace that will recycle everything that
the library and Friends can't use.

And when folks will not even take the free ones -- THEN it is back to the
dumpster problem! And, the Salvation Army and Goodwill both told us that if
we can't sell them or give them away then they didn't want them either!

Based on a posting I saw on Publib a year or two ago, I believe, we started
a freebie table for all of the books that we feel are just too far beyond
saving to go into the book sale. You would be amazed at what disappears
from the table.
We are very fortunate that we have a large space outside that is covered by
a roof, so we are able to do this easily. Although, I had a patron
"complain" that we had put free books out on a very cold day and he thought
it was unkind to tempt people to stand in the cold and browse.
All that said, I highly recommend it if you have the space. I have never
had a patron complain that the books on the table should be elsewhere.
Thank you to the publib member who suggested it.
