Many years (20) ago in Pocatello Idaho - the children's department checked out pets for the weekend. We successfully circulated a box turtle, a gerbil, and a guinea pig for a long time.

Toys, tools, fishing rods (success not guaranteed) just fine.  I remember loaning Polaroid cameras during the early 1980's, problem was that many patrons were upset that they didn't come with film furnished!

But small furry, finny, scaly, cuddly pets??  Imagine being a young borrower and having to deal with returning a dead, borrowed pet!  A real life version of Monty Python's Dead Parrot routine!

Would the fine cover interment costs?  What would the ASPCA  or PETA say?

Inquiring minds want to know!

It's a historical accident, it seems to me, that this sort of sharing has been confined to books.  Why not tools? Why not cars?

You are obviously not as old as I am! Back in the early 70's, some libraries did check out tools and lawn mowers.
