[Publib] RE: Salary Question on Interview

Paying travel expenses for the interview just makes good sense. The bigger question is about re-location expenses. These are a MUST for higher level professional positions and must be taken into consideration. It could run into the thousands of dollars. Not only does this involve moving one's belongings, but should include some days of stay locally in which to find a home or apartment. Expenses for this should be paid by the Library. If a Board hesitates on paying re-location expenses or even the relatively minor costs associated with travel to an interview, they need to be advised about the common sense aspects of attracting and retaining high quality professionals.

When we interviewed for Reference Librarian last summer, we asked all interviewees to keep track of their mileage (all drove, one from Iowa and one from Wisconsin). Several of the local candidates declined to be paid for their mileage. We paid the standard 48½¢ per mile. We had one candidate from Texas whom we interviewed via conference call. We would have paid her airfare to come here had that been the outcome. The successful candidate came twice and we paid mileage both times, plus took her out to lunch. We thought it was only fair to pay travel expenses, especially for the excellent candidates who applied for the position.

We are currently accepting application for Director and I am pretty sure we'll pay travel expenses, though that will be up to the Board. A salary range is included in all job postings.

Hi Valerie,
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in what kind of library paid for you to come to an out-of-state interview. I've heard that no libraries are doing that. And what area of the country you live in and your experience level.

I'm a new graduate and expect to pay my way if I have an out-of-state interview.

Thanks.
