Wynita,
OLAC (Online AudioVisual Catalogers) has crafted a draft document on
cataloging playaways. It can be found at
http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/cts/olac/new/ .
As to classifying your collection, I think that would depend on how
easily you can get reports from your ILS and how you intend on shelving
them. If you can pull information from your ILS without having a
separate holding code and you intend on inter-shelving all your
audiobooks, then I would not create a separate collection. If, however,
you intend on keeping playaways separate from your other audiobooks,
then I would assign a separate holding code or call number prefix to
them. The same would apply if your ILS would only be able to pull the
stats for them if you have the collection defined separately from
others.

Subject: [Publib] cataloging playaways
This is a tech services question, but our cataloger asked my opinion and
I said I'd pass it along. My library has purchased two pre-loaded
playaways and how to other libraries catalog them? Do you simply catalog
them with our audio books on CD or have you created a special holdings
code? My opinion is to create a holdings code so as to specifically
track circulation, but does anyone have a better idea? Thanks so much
for your help.
