We did change the titles of all of our classes to "Basic" as in Basic
Excel, pt. 1, Basic Word, pt. 2, etc.
Our catalog also states "Learn basic function with Excel 2000. Typing
and Mouse skill Required."
Our instructors always start out explaining that even our "part 3"
classes are just the last part of a three part series equal to what you
would get from an Introduction to Excel at your local college"
We than encourage anyone who expected training beyond this level to feel
free to leave, even during the class if what we are teaching is too
basic for them.
It seems to be working for us.

Subject: [Publib] changing the names of computer classes
We are debating whether to change the names of our computer classes. We
find that in almost every class, there are people who are either too
advanced or too novice for the classes. The instructors would like to
change the names to see if it would help solve the problem, and our PR
person thinks it won't make any difference.
Currently our classes are Basics of Keyboarding, Computers 101,
Computers 102, Internet Basics, E-mail Made Easy, Welcome to Word, Intro
to Excel, Intro to Access, Using Powerpoint, Let's Get WYLD (our library
catalog) and Dynamic Databases.
We would like to try consistent names, ie, Computer Basics, Internet
Basics, Email Basics, Word Basics, etc. hoping that the repetition of
"basics" would warn off the advanced students. We'll probably always get
the novices. We don't want to make students take placement tests,
either.
Has anyone tried this? Did it work?
