[Publib] Divorce program?

Good question! Perhaps you should check with the state bar. I live in SC and our state bar provides speakers in the fall and spring to speak on three different topics. As a library, we usually opt to host all three seperate session topics if our space and schedule permits. If my memory serves me correctly the topics are: family law, wills/probates/estates, and legal issues in personal healthcare.

Once I contact the state bar to let them know we'll host, I supply them with dates and times that work for us. They take on the responsibility of securing a speaker from my county and set up the logistics in getting the speaker to our library. Aside from setting up the room and greeting attendees, the program runs itself!

Hopefully your state has something similar!

CTLS had a seminar a couple of years ago on using http://www.texaslawhelp.org/TX/index.cfm . You might contact your local bar association (link on the Texas Law Help page) & see if you can get some one. You also might check your local legal aid association. You might see about getting a legal assistant rather than a lawyer.
Best of luck on your program.

PS. Please e-mail me the results of the program if it comes off, I'd like to do one here on using the Texas Law Help site & it would be helpful if I had some attendance figures from a similar program.

Subject: [Publib] Divorce program?

  Dear PUBLIB,

I work at a small public library in South Texas, and I am noticing a lot of patrons coming in and requesting divorce materials. To respond to this, I was thinking about setting up an information session where an attorney comes into the library and gives free advice about how to file the necessary paperwork here in the state of Texas. A couple of my concerns are:

1. Will people be too sheepish about such a personal situation to attend a program about it: and
2. Would any attorney actually do this, even if I pay them a flat fee?

All help appreciated.
