Kevin --

One thing to consider when reacting to GraceAnne's remarks is that she was speaking from her experience in the 1980's (if I'm doing the math correctly). I posted from my remarks based on my situation in the 1990's (as a librarian in a special library.) In recent years, things have changed for the better in a lot of places but employer-provided day care, or reasonable accommodation in the workplace (flexible schedule, working at home, permitting children to accompany parents under certain circumstances) is still hit-or-miss.

When there's a larger pool of job seekers, employers can turn a deaf ear to the problem. If the pool of qualified workers is small (high tech and engineering jobs), many companies anxious to recruit or retain good workers who happen to be parents will go out of their way to address this.

For example, most hospitals in this area offers onsite day care for employee children or subsidizes day care expenses at a quality provider nearby. If they did not, they would see a mass exodus to the hospitals that help. A number of surveys have shown that, after health insurance, child care benefits are a key factor in employee job satisfaction

after-school program is inexcusable. Your experiences further reinforce my
belief that all the "Family values" talk by so many in this country is at
worst hypocritical cant and at best born of complete ignorance.
