I just came across an interesting book of quotes and anecdotes about
books and reading. Two perspectives on libraries for you to ponder:
Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order,
calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold,
light nor dark. The pleasure they give is steady, unorgastic, reliable,
deep and long-lasting. In any library in the world, I am at home,
unselfconscious, still and absorbed. - Germaine Greer, Daddy, We Hardly
Knew You
And the smell of the library was always the same--the musty odour of old
clothes mixed with the keener scent of unwashed bodies, creating what
the chief librarian had once described as "the steam of the social
soup." - Peter Ackroyd, Chatterton
>From A Book Addict's Treasury, by Julie Rugg & Lynda Murphy.
Have a good weekend,
