I declare and affirm, you couldn't make this stuff up.
I spoke on the phone to a fellow I'd known for many years, who used to be
the enforcement chief of a whole state's department of labor. I asked if he
could provide me with some statistics on a certain element of enforcement (I'm
leaving this a mystery so as to protect the guilty). Also sprach er:
"Well, we used to collect that data, no matter what the agency people tell
you. It was kept in my office. Yeah, it never went to the state library or
anything. We had it in a big box. One day a reporter from a newspaper came
around and wanted information, so I gave him the box. He never brought it
back."
This didn't seem to be a big deal to my old pal. That an agency would
summarily discard its only records of enforcement--what the hey! And so?
Beyond that he couldn't help me except to say that the entire agency was
supposed to have become computerized, but that the money was received, and spent
on something else.
I would swear to the veracity of this, only I'm an atheist and can only
declare, as I do regularly on my FOIA requests.
