[Publib] Do You Work Here?

Here's my fun story on a related matter. Many years ago when I made a trip over to the UK friends asked if I was going to visit any libraries, I replied "no, I'd only be asked a reference question" however I was fortunate enough to visit the Bodleian Library. A friend had arraigned for a visiting professor to show me around Oxford. As we registered to be allowed to view Duke Humphrey's Library the librarian took note of the fact I was from Virginia.
She later came up to me and said "I need to speak to you before you leave". I was afraid she thought I was trying to steal the Magna Carta or some such. Turns out she had ancestors who had settled in North Carolina in the 1600s but had returned to England during the "unpleasantness" of the late 1700s. She wanted to know the best sources for genealogical research over here. I guess this means I can honestly put on my resume "reference work at Oxford University"

OK I have to chime in here. It must be something we exude as librarians. I was in Tiananmen Square, waiting for other members of my group, and another tourist came and asked me for directions. This was in CHINA! I look like a mild mannered librarian from Brooklyn, nothing more or less. Why would anyone think I knew my way around Beijing?

Many times at Dodger games (which I attend wearing a baseball hat with pins and carrying a tote bag) I have been asked for directions. The ushers wear uniforms, and no aspect of my attire resembles them.
