[Publib] Combining departments

Hi Mary, you may be thinking of my post, though we combined reference
and technical services (not circ and tech).

They have been combined for about two years. I would say it has been a
success overall. My title is Manager, Reference and Technical Services
and I have an assistant manager for each department (ref and tech). I
can't imagine how it would work without the two assistant managers, who
are great employees and do a lot of the day-to-day stuff. A lot of my
time is spent coordinating projects and working with the management team
on initiatives for the whole library.

Here's how we're structured:
Full-time employees (for us, this is 38 hours/week; the manager/asst
managers are exempt)
- 1 manager (degreed)
- 2 assistant managers (degreed)
- 1 ref librarian (degreed)
- 6 ref specialists
- 1 serials/acquisitions specialist
Part-time employees (ranging from 15-23 hours/week)
- 3 tech specialists, ie catalogers
- 2 tech assistants, ie adding/processing
- 2 tech clerks, ie processing

Please let me know if you have any questions or want more information.

Hello everyone,
We have two managers retiring within the next 6-9 months. One is
Circulation Services and one is Tech Services. Awhile back, someone
posted to PUBLIB about combining these two manager positions into one.
This seems like an ideal time to explore this idea. If you've done this
please let me know if it worked or not and if you would do it all over
again given the chance.

Thanks so much!
Mary
