On behalf of the committee members of the new Zora Neale Hurston Award (from
the Reference and User Services Association division of the American Library
Association) I would like to present the following 'Call for Nominations' to
the members of Publib.
If you are interested in this award please read the following. If you know
of an individual who may be eligible for this award please follow the
directions for submission as listed below.
My apologies if this is a duplicate posting for anyone, the committee
members are trying to post to as many discussion lists as possible.

Call for Nominations for the Zora Neale Hurston Award
The Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) is proud to announce its
newest award. Established July 2008 and created to honor the life and work
of Zora Neale Hurston, the award is given to a RUSA member whose efforts
promote Hurston's writings and that of other African American writers and
who furthers the professional development of RUSA librarians so that they
can continue to build multicultural collections and serve diverse
communities.
The award consists of $1,250 to attend the ALA Annual Conference, tickets to
the Literary Tastes breakfast and the Friends of Libraries U.S.A. (FOLUSA)
Author tea, and a set of the Zora Neale Hurston books published by Harper
Perennial at the time the award is made. We will announce the winner at the
RUSA Reception at the Denver Midwinter Meetings 2009. The award will be
presented at the Annual Conference in Chicago , 2009.
Selection criteria are:
The candidate must illustrate that his or her program, display, collection
project, readers' advisory project, or innovation in service promoted
African American literature and highlighted its rich history and diversity.
The contribution serves as a model for others.
The contribution is innovative and/or advances a service in this area.
In order to be eligible for the award, candidates:
Must be members of RUSA. Self-nominations are welcome as are nominations by
colleagues or other parties.
Candidates or persons nominating a candidate must submit a nomination letter
that describes the project and must include photos, booklists, screen
captures or other forms of illustration of the project that supports the
nomination.
A brief (250) word essay must be submitted which explains how attending the
annual conference will help further candidates' efforts to support and
promote African American literature.
Nomination letter, essay and other materials must be submitted
electronically to Deborah Costa, debe at library.ucla.edu.
Additional information will be posted on the RUSA homepage under the Awards
link which is currently under construction;
All nominations are due by December 1, 2009.
