There’s No Place Like … Garden City, Kansas
For a small town situated out in the wheat lands of western Kansas, it has a lot to brag about. The Santa Fe Trail came through here in the 1820s and in when the sun is just right, you can still make out the wheel ruts on the edge of town. The Santa Fe railroad followed in the 1870’s and really gave the town its start. Some say they called it Garden City to distinguish it from its rowdy neighbor – Dodge City – 50 miles down the tracks to the east. It was the heart of the Dust Bowl in the 1920s and 30s. But it took Truman Capote to really put the place on the map – it was the site of the Clutter killings and trials Capote immortalized in “In Cold Blood” Today Garden City and the surrounding area in Finney County have a population of about 40,000 – and it is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the county -- including descendents of the Anglo homesteaders and Hispanics that came to work on the railroad, and more recent immigrants from Vietnam, Mexico and South America and now Somalia all of whom have come to work in agriculture and the beef production and packing industry that are the mainstays of the local economy.
