At Skokie Public Library we order about 150 copies of the 1099-MISC form
from the Tax Form Outlet Program each year [each sheet actually has 2
forms].
This is the form most people need. It is used to report the income of
sub-contractors,consultants and contract workers [in place of the W-2
which is for regular employees].
Most of the people who ask for the other 1099's e.g. INT for Interest
paid or DIV for Dividends are really in need of the forms from the
institution that they received the Interest or Dividends from. If in
fact they really do need one of the other 1099 forms [this is a rarety],
we direct them to the IRS or some stationary stores which sell these
forms.
Finally, also order some 1096 forms. This form is called the Annual
Summary & Transmittal form where the company would summarize the 1099's
they have issued to their contract workers. The IRS does not accept
photocopy of the 1096 either, though it is a single sheet form. Why this
is is beyond my comprehension.

First, thank you Tony, for raising the question and also thank you Dean
and Cynthia for your excellent advice. I have one more questions with
respect to this issue. I do not see one "1099" form, instead it appears
that there are now some dozen or so variations of the 1099. Do you
request particular ones, such as 1099-B and 1099-MISC in some ratio, or
does the IRS have some standard assortment? Inquiring minds want to
know.
Again, thank you so much for your sharing your experience; I could have
made a lot of people happy this last tax season, but next year I'll be
ready.
Cordially,
