Job Opening:  Librarian III, Public Services Supervisor in Reference

This position supervises public services in our Main library reference

*Job Title: * Librarian III

*Location: *Grand Rapids Public Library

*Wage Range: *$51,249 to $65,408 per year

*Hours: *40 hours per week (weekend and evening hours will be required)

*Supervisor: *Librarian IV, Department Coordinator


*Job Summary:*

This is an advanced Librarian position that involves the supervision of 
a Branch or a specialized function of the Library. The work is performed 
independently but under the general direction of a supervisor who can be 
consulted on difficult problems. Results are subject to periodic review 
by a superior. The actual duties may vary depending on the specific 
assignment within the Library.


*Duties and Responsibilities:*

   1.

      Supervises, plans, organizes, schedules, assigns, and evaluates
      the work of professional, paraprofessional, and clerical
      employees; provides training, development and motivation as needed.

   2.

      Participates in decisions regarding the hire, evaluation,
      discipline and discharge of employees.

   3.

      Performs variety of reference and reader's advisory service for
      patrons; plans and executes programs for library patrons and staff.

   4.

      Manages and maintains library collections in compliance with
      established Library policy and procedures.

   5.

      Participates in development of Branch or Departmental plans,
      describing personnel, equipment and facility needs to meet the
      needs of service of the Library.

   6.

      Maintains records, prepares and presents reports related to the
      work; attends a variety of meetings; undertakes special
      assignments as needed; speaks to groups about library services.

   7.

      Participates in development and installation of new procedures for
      the Library.

   8.

      Interprets and supports administrative decisions to staff and public.

   9.

      Represents the library to affiliate organizations by appointment
      of the Library Director.


*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: *

   1.

      Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, practices and
      procedures involved in professional library work.

   2.

      Demonstrated managerial, leadership, and organizational skills.

   3.

      Considerable knowledge of contemporary as well as historical
      theory and practice in appropriate library specialty demonstrated
      by experience in the specialty.

   4.

      Knowledge of trends and developments in library work.

   5.

      Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

   6.

      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
      with other employees, library patrons and the general public.

   7.

      Continue to educate self on Library developments by attending
      conferences and professional meetings as well as by reading
      professional literature.


*Working Conditions:*

The employee must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time 
in the performance of the duties associated with this position. Lifting 
objects weighing up to 45 pounds with out assistance is also required. 
The ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer 
is essential to this position.


*Education:*

Possession of a masters degree in library science including course work 
in the area of specialty; four years of progressively responsible 
professional librarian experience. At least two of the years of 
experience will be in the specialty area. The person will also have two 
years of experience as a supervisor.


Certification as a professional librarian form the State Library of 
Michigan is required.
