Earlier this spring we did have laptops in our division for a short time
but discontinued it. Other subject divisions got ours.

Getting a laptop was the same procedure as making a reservation for a
session on a regular computer. If a patron made a computer reservation,
he or she couldn't get a laptop unless they either canceled the
reservation or logged off on the assigned computer station. Once the
patron had the laptop, the log in process was the same and the 70 minute
session rules applied. We have a separate module in our computer
reservation system for laptops.

We would ask for a government issued ID and DC library card and hold
them at the reference desk. Each of our five laptops had numbers on the
covers and a sign in/sign out sheet (kept in the back office) so we'd
know which laptops were available or not. All the laptops have basic
computer software applications and wireless internet.

We had to stop offering laptops because it was too time consuming
dealing with them. Plus we're a busy division. The laptops could be
problematic at times. I've yet to hear of theft.

Hope this helps.
