Hi Eve

All our cds are shelved by genre and then, depending upon the size of
the genre and the library, by alphabetical order.

The genres we use are
World
Film/TV/Musical
Country
Rock/Pop (which includes country in the smaller libraries)
Easy Listening
Jazz/Blues
Classical
Concerto
Instrumental
Vocal
Symphony
Ballet
Orchestra
I'm sure there are more as well.

The only genre that is shelved alphabetically no matter what library is
the Rock one. Some of our smaller branches break up their Jazz and
Classical genres by alphabet groups (A-D, E-L etc). It seems to work
pretty well. To help us when shelving items each genre has its own
coloured sticker - red for rock, pink for world, light blue for easy
listening, etc, although our new sticker system has the genre and artist
printed on its coloured sticker which makes things really easy.
Now if only pesky borrowers wouldn't put things back in the wrong
places!

The Placer County library in California is examining options in
catalogueing and shelving music cds. If your library has catalogued and
shelved cds by genre, alphabetical order, or any combination of the two,
please reply to this letting me know the system used and if it works
well.
For example, does anyone do straight alphabet by artist or title
of cd? If cds are divided by genre, what are the classifications and
how are they arranged within genre?
