[Publib] self service at airports

I have oft wondered the same thing and was told it's because someone underage could use the card to buy liquor...or brewski's! Where is fingerprint technology outside of NYPD and Disneyworld? We are ready!

Ah, self service!

At my local Kroger they have finally upgraded the wretched, blurred
monitors, so my ageing eyes can read the print. And the sound is less
scratchy and garbled.

But the basic program.... at least once in every visit I am instructed to
leave the item on the reader surface and wait for cashier assistance - for
what? I can never tell. Perhaps the station can sense my irritation, or my
politics. There seems to be no common factor.

Mind you, I am a "valued Kroger shopper" by virtue of having filled out a
form to entitle me a bar code bearing, magnetic strip embellished Kroger
Kard! Which I sign in with to take advantage of special prices.

Why then cannot the d****ed program remember the age that the gum-snapping
cashier keyed in soooo long ago when I bought Zinfandel for dinner? Why do
I have to present my driver's license to the cashier every time I want to
buy some brewskis? Inquiring minds want to know!

If the program can keep track of my purchases in order to give me a discount
on gasoline after $100 surely it can remember the single datum of my birth
date.

Just my $.025 worth....

Hillary,
We flew just this weekend and had our pre-printed boarding passes. At
O'Hare Airport in Chicago, they have staff standing to help those with
self check-in. It took the employee three tries to get us to the start
screen because the person in front of us must not have finished the
process and she kept hitting the wrong button.

At the airport in Bismarck, ND the person that needed to give us our
luggage tags wasn't behind the desk when we got there so we still stood
in line for about 10-15 minutes.

I like the idea of self service, if it's truly self service. At both
airports, we had to wait for someone else to give us the tags for our
luggage. That was a bit frustrating, to be honest.

A good lesson for me for when we implement self service in the future. I
agree it's helpful to have a person stationed nearby to give assistance
if needed but we also need to remove barriers to allowing the service to
work in the best way for our patrons/clients/customers.

I just flew back from Sacramento and in the small, almost empty area for
UA there I decided I wanted to try to fly standby for an earlier flight,
rather than spend 3 additional hours at the Sacramento airport. I knew
this was possible but didn't know how to do that. Though there was an
entire row of empty self checkin machines, I needed a person because I
was terrified of accidentally cancelling my confirmed reservation,
adding a huge fee, etc. Terrified for no purpose, but still terrified.
