We are getting ready to install a self service check out and it is NOT
because we are trying to save money, avoid dealing with patrons (or
customers if you prefer that term), or not provide personal service to
those who would like it. We are adding a self serve check out as a
CHOICE for our patrons, but they are welcome to use the personal
service check out if they would like. They may prefer to use a self
check out because they are in a hurry or want to check out something
personal that they may not want the clerk at the desk to know about.
Also, by offering a self checkout, if it does eventually get increased
usage and we find that we may not need as much help at the service
desk, wouldn't it be great to have a staff member out in the stacks
offering assistance to patrons? (Think we talked about this already-
roaming reference, why not roaming readers' advisory as well ?) Anyway,
we are not looking at offering a self check out as a way to minimize
patron service, but rather to enhance it.
