[Publib] Charging for programs

We do charge for a few things, but not many. Nearly every summer the
Summer Reading Program involves a bus trip (Chicago; St. Louis; and
Hannibal, MO, one year) and people pay for the privilege of taking a
trip. Recently the teen board held some kind of program (?poetry night?
and/or "open mike" night?) and charged $1.00 OR a can of food, to be
donated to a local food pantry. I think the Youth Services Librarian
was more interested in the charitable part than she was in covering any
costs of refreshments, et al., with that one lone dollar. For
three-four years, in the depths of winter, several staff members have
organized an after-hours "Ladies' Night Out" on a Friday (and very
popular it is, too, even if it isn't specifically library-oriented).
This year they requested $5 per person, to help cover the cost of
refreshments and other supplies for preparation; no one protested. But
that's about it for us. We try to be free, most-lee.
