[Publib] Subject lines (was: "Old" librarian, etc.)

Jamie, THANK YOU.
You have so politely pointed out an issue that I, as a (old) librarian, feel
like fingernails-on-blackboard. In other lists, I just figure laymen don't
any better but, in a list primarily comprised of librarians, I would have
thought this would be second nature.

For those too young to remember, imagine typing catalog cards on a
typewriter (you can check Wikipedia if you don't know what a typewriter is)
and the subject heading had to be the same on every card, the author had to
be the same, the title had to be the same... And, there was no backspace key
(AND I walked a mile to school in the snow, too).

Karen, I'm a digest reader, and have no trouble matching subject lines -
that's what cut-n-paste is for (except when my fingers are quicker than my
brain and my reply includes the entire digest along with the useless subject
line "RE: Publib Digest, Vol 36, Issue 47").

|Jamie, this is partly driven by people reading digests who (correctly)
|change the subject to one similar to that on the thread. It's hard to
|get this perfect, but kudos to them for doing so -- and not just
|"hitting reply." :-)
