FW: [Publib] MS Vista or my laptop?

My wife also has one of these (now seemingly) notorious Toshiba touchpads on her laptop. We ran into the same kinds of issues and we're running XP. We did go into the settings and made it a little less responsive, but in the end got a plug in mouse and don't seem to have problems anymore.

A little more specific hardware note:

My wife *was* having these problems--and it's not so much the sensitivity of the Toshiba touchpad as the programming: By default, various regions of the touchpads trigger certain actions...like minimizing windows. It's just Toshiba being helpful...in its own special way.

You should be able to open the Toshiba touchpad control software (it may have a different name--synaptics or something) and reprogram the actions or turn them off altogether.

My bet is on the Toshiba. I am running Vista on a Gateway laptop and so far have not had any trouble with things minimizing or jumping cursors. How close is the touchpad to the keyboard? I know someone with a Sony who had trouble with that. If you can adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad so that it does not see your palm or wrist but only the actual touch of your fingers that might help.
My only complaint about Vista (and the new Mac OS Leopard) is the "dumbing down" all the tech tricks I have learned over the years I no longer need because my computer does it all for me. Sort of takes the fun out of it.

I too have not switched to Office 2007, but was happy to find a patch that would allow my public users to edit their 2007 documents on my 2003 systems!

Cynthia,
I would be rather interested in these responses as well. I have seen the same things with my new Toshiba/Vista combination. The screen suddenly minimizing is very annoying. Have you found your cursor jumping while word processing? There are times when I find myself typing in the middle of another line.

I am adjusting to Vista, but have not yet switched to Windows 07 * it is a dramatic change from XP.

My own PC came with MS Vista, and the more I use it the less I like it. The press and news bytes seems to be fairly complimentary, but odd things happen when I am in the middle of something - the window changes size on its own or minimizes, the start menu pops up when i click on something else on the part of the screen where it normally appears - when asked for.......

Your opinion please - is it the Vista causing the quirks or is it the new Toshiba? (software vs hardware question I guess)

I have a bit of apprehension thinking of the approaching time when my library will get new pcs, and Vista.

(off topic - the new spider solitaire 4 suit stinks too)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cynthia
