[Publib] Book series help

Hello,  

I'm trying to nail down a children's series and am not having any luck.
Patron thinks the series was set in the late 1800's (he recalls some
townspeople in one of the books being amazed at a visitor's belt, since
they all used suspenders).  It was set in the west or midwest, and was
geared towards 4th-6th graders (he was ten when he read the books).
They were mysteries, and he's fairly certain the setting was a Jesuit
boys' school or a Jesuit orphanage.  Does this ring a bell with anyone?
