Once again, the MacArthur fellows have been announced. Once again, there
are no librarians among the group. Here's a fine question for a library school
discussion, or to spice up your next staff meeting: Why not?
Is it because librarians do not possess the right stuff? The program awards
unrestricted fellowships "To talented individuals who have shown
extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked
capacity for self-direction. There are three criteria for selection of Fellows:
exceptional creativity, promise for future advances based on a track record of
significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate
subsequent creative work."
Give that a bit of thought. Is it the nature of the library as a service
institution or the nature of librarians adhering to traditional standards of
self-effacing service? Perhaps ignorance or prejudice on the part of the
selectors? Last: When you look at the profiles of this year's Fellows, think of
how much research most of them had to do in the library to attempt their own
work.
