Subject: Re: [Publib] Re: The Wyoming Mudflap Girl Flap
This also came up on the ALA Council listserv. I copied them some other
mudflaps--one of a slim guy and a sort of fat-redneck-stereotype. There are
many others, including same/opposite sex partnerings. You haven't seen
offensive yet.
The point of these mudflaps is to toss a minor vulgarity into the face of
the vehicle behind, and of course, at society in general. Back in the old
days, tattoos served the same function before they became Art. I liked them
before they became pretentious, when they were simply frightening,
offensive, vulgar or just plain stupid. There's something to be said for a
personal message that essentially tells the world, "Ha ha ha. Now go to
hell."
The back of my truck is a sort of mudflap. I spray painted the gate with
blackboard paint so I could offer unsolicited messages to the public. Many
of them are political. I try to offend all parts of the social spectrum.
Today it reads, "That's okay--nobody admits voting for Nixon, either." I'm
not good at drawing or I might try to put on a mudflap librarian, complete
with bun and glasses. Holding a book in one hand and a pistol in the other.
Darn, maybe I'll get that as a tattoo.
