Death rates in our military from actual military action aren't as large as  
you would think.  American combat fatalities in World War II were 292,131,  
with non-combat deaths of 115,185.  This should be compared to the ratio in  
other nations, both among military and civilians--and perhaps especially among

On the other hand, we do maintain a rather high rate of carnage and death  in

We have our own personal Iraq here in Los Angeles, at least if you live in  
the wrong part of town.  You can tell if it's the wrong part by the chalk  
outlines on the sidewalk.
