Greetings,
Very quick research using all of the words 'library chat public"
yields: http://tinyurl.com/yw5f9x
with 9,210,000 entries. It appears that the count is off.

Abigail,
Morton Grove has just (today) approved testing of chat reference with
patrons. We are using Meebo as an aggregator to not lock out someone because
they use a different chat service that the library might choose. The whole
process looks pretty straight forward technologically with the biggest
concerns being staff acceptance and patron awareness. No surprises there.
The article's numbers sound low, but not having researched it myself I can't
say they are wrong.

There's a great article on reference

3,1,3985442.story?ctrack=1&cset=true> and IM in the Chicago Tribune but
there's a quote that bothers me.
"Nationwide, about 140 libraries offer instant-messaging reference, the vast
majority at universities, according to libsuccess.org, a library information
Web site. Of the 37 public libraries using the service, 15 are in Illinois
and mostly in the Chicago area."
Am I wrong in thinking that more than 37 public libraries in the nation
offer IM reference? And is anyone experimenting with reference via text
message (which just seems bizarre to me)?
Happy Friday!
