[Publib] How Important is ALA Accreditation?

It is a simple task for the human resources dept. of a large organization to check and see if a program is accredited or not.

It's the sort of objective way of disqualifying applicants that HR departments prefer. It's been established by legal challenges and court cases. Eliminating candidates on such a basis prevents charges of unfair hiring practices. The number of exams to reviews or interviews to be conducted is reduced as is the time required to do security and reference checks.

I do not disagree with points about experience, skils and additional coursework,; also publishing, presenting at conferences, getting involved in professional organizations made a candidate stand out but these items will get a person past the "gatekeeping" sort of requirements that are common.

Prospective students who are deciding among programs would be well advised to select the one that is accredited.

What can you do? Increase your skills and experience so that you are more attractive to potential employers. The diploma (accredited or not) really says very little about you. Your knowledge, skills, experience, accomplishments, and ability to communicate those things will more likely get you the job.
